I love the idea of snack mix, and who doesn’t really? Instead of needing to buy four different kinds of chips for variety, you can get a single bag that comes packed with all of the above.
Coming from The States, it seems like snack mix in Ireland and the UK is pretty sparse. For this reason, I was really pleased to see MixUps on the shelves of my local supermarket. The first flavour that I tried was Cheese, for obvious reasons.
This mix is made up of Doritos, Monster Munch, French Fries, and Wotsits. We all know what Doritos are (PM me if you don’t), Monster Munch is some sort of corn-based puffed snack, French Fries are like a puffed potato snack, and Wotsits are like Cheetos. Texturally, it’s not a bad mix, but it does leave a bit to be desired.
3 out of 4 of the components are puffed, which is a bit too high of a ratio for me. It would be a bit better broken up with some pretzels or Chex cereal. It’s pretty similar in makeup to Tayto Occasions. Both are totally edible, but when shovelling it into your mouth, there isn’t really enough diversity for it to really feel like a mix.
If you’re like me, you like to nosh on a mix of the different pieces of the mix at the same time. With the textural monotony that becomes practically pointless. This is a real problem facing the snack food industry in this part of the world, and I have yet to see anything being done to address it.
Then there’s the flavour. Let’s talk flavour. The cheese was actually quite mild, such that I could eat a lot of it really quickly. However, due to the aforementioned textural shortcoming, I then got bored and gave up. That being said, I liked it enough to give the “Spicy” flavour a go. I was hoping for a Hot Cheetos kind of sensation. This left me pretty let down. The flavour on these is more sweet than spicy. I ate a few pieces on my way home from work, left them in my bag for a few days, took them out of my bag and stashed them on a couch for the weekend, then threw them away.
Verdict: Not worth the money or cals
Would I buy them again? Probably not, although they do have a Bacon and Cheese flavour, so who knows
